This four-part program examines factors that are making single-parent families so commonplace, and explores the dynamics of living in non-traditional families. Using dramatizations based on actual case histories, the series depicts the problems and satisfactions of learning to manage a family without the presence of a spouse. #1: The Changing Family Documents the startling demographic changes that have taken place in the American family. Five single parents discuss their financial burdens, managing work and household, society's reaction to their families, and their struggles with depression and loneliness. #2: When Parents Divorce Portrays the shock for children of "losing" a parent, their feelings of insecurity, and the tendency to blame themselves, or one parent, for the breakup. Viewers are also shown that the relief parents may feel at ending an unhappy relationship is usually balanced by equally strong feelings of failure and guilt. #3: One Day at a Time Presents the day-to-day realities of running a single-parent household, including the struggle to pay the bills, find appropriate housing, and arrange for child care. The increased responsibilities, and consequent maturity of children in these families is emphasized, and their attitudes toward the parents' dating efforts are described. #4: The Stepparent Family Examines the special complications that may result when a parent's remarriage creates a stepparent family. Problems covered include multiple grandparents, new sibling relationships, and differing blood ties to the parent. |
