Rules of Conduct

The San Bernardino Valley College Library provides a place for the preservation of books and related materials in organized collections for use by our students, staff, and faculty in reading and quiet study.

The patrons of the SBVC Library are expected to behave in a manner that does not disturb other Library patrons, disrupt the operation of the Library, or endanger Library materials.

The Library's rules are designed to promote the comfort and security of of the Library's patron's, staff and collection, and to insure that the Library remains an inviting, pleasant, and safe place conducive to reading, studying, and learning.

Library Users are NOT permitted to:

  • Interfere with another person's use of the Library or with the Library personnel's performance of their duties.
  • Consume food or beverages (except water from the drinking fountains) anywhere in the library
  • Sleep anywhere in the Library, sit on the floor or the stairs, or lie or lounge on the floor.
  • Use cell phones to make or receive calls in the Library.
  • Smoke anywhere in the Library, including the restrooms.
  • Play audio equipment so loudly that others can hear it. The use of head sets is permitted as long as such use does not disturb any other Library patrons or staff members.
  • Engage in lewd behavior.
  • Talk loudly, make noise, whistle, sing, shout, use abusive or threatening language, or engage in other disruptive conduct.
  • Bring animals into the Library, except those needed to assist a patron with a disability.
  • Use the Internet to access pornographic web sites.
  • Use the restrooms for bathing.
  • Leave children unattended in the Library, or allow them to run about, talk in a voice louder than a whisper, or engage in other behavior that is disruptive to study and reading.
  • Solicit anywhere in the Library.
  • Go barefoot or without a shirt inside the Library building.
  • Lie down on furniture, put feet up on furniture, or move furniture (other than chairs at tables).
  • Ask Library personnel to store or watch over personal belongings. In addition, any unattended belongings (such as bags, backpacks, briefcases, etc.) will be turned over to the District Police.
  • Vandalize the Library building, furnishings, restrooms, or collections.
  • Enter the Library with bicycles or skateboards.
  • Bring weapons of any sort into the Library
  • Play musical instruments in the Library
