Two-Year Associates Degree

The Library Science Associate of Arts degree at San Bernardino Valley College is a two-year program that provides students with an overview of libraries and information centers, their various departments and functions, the role they play in today's society, and a window to their future development. It is ideal for those who wish to work for libraries that require their employees to have both a well-rounded general education and specialized training in the library field.

If you are interested in obtaining an Associate of Arts degree, contact a counselor and arrange for an appointment to develop your educational plan to meet the college's general education requirements. Within the 60 semester units of college coursework required to obtain an Associate of Arts degree, 18 units in the Library Science field must be selected from the following list in order to graduate with a Library Science major:

LIB 062: Care and Repair of Library Materials (1 unit)
LIB 064: Introduction to Libraries for Library Technicians (1 units)
LIB 065: Public Services for Librarians (3 units)
LIB 066: Acquisitions for Library Technicians (3 units)
LIB 067:  Library Technical Services (3 units)
LIB 068: Library Media Services (2 units)
LIB 069: Library Automation for Library Technicians (2 units)
              (or any other hands-on college-level

                               (or any other college-level
                                 literature course)

Please see page 30 Catalog pg 29-129 [PDF] of the College Catalog for further Associate Degree requirements.

For most students who are seeking entry-level positions in the library field, an Associate of Arts degree is not required and a certificate in Library Technology will be sufficient.
