Registering for Tutoring ServicesBack to Top
How to Register for Tutoring Services
All students who wish to receive tutoring must first go to our office in the Learning Center (on the second floor of the Liberal Arts Building) to fill out a short registration form. After you share with us the area(s) where you would like help, we will set up an appointment for you to meet with your assigned tutor. Remember that most of the tutors are college students too, so try to be as flexible as possible about the hours you might have available to meet with our staff.

  • Be on time for your scheduled appointment.
  • Bring relevant materials, such as lecture notes, assignments, tests, etc.
  • Think of specific questions you want to ask the tutor.

Becoming a TutorBack to Top

How to Become a Tutor
Those who become tutors are often surprised to realize that they gain more from the experience than just a paycheck. In addition to drawing a salary, tutors strengthen their interpersonal and coaching skills, reinforce their academic knowledge, and gain the satisfaction of knowing that they are making a significant difference in the lives of their fellow students!

When selecting a tutor for our staff, we look for both academic and interpersonal skills. Specifically, in order to be hired as a tutor:
  • You must be enrolled in at least 6 units at the college;
  • You must have earned an overall college grade point average of at least 3.0, and a GPA of 3.5 in the subject tutored;
  • You must be able to pass a Tutoring Department competency exam for English and/or math;
  • You must demonstrate during your interview that you have excellent communication skills;
  • An instructor must recommend you for the position based on your performance in his/her class; and,
  • There must be enough of a demand for the subject(s) you are able to tutor to warrant having you on staff.
Once hired, we will do our best to work with you to develop a schedule that will meet your needs as well as those of the students you will be tutoring. You will also be required to complete a one-unit training course, ORIENT 110 (Tutor Training). For more information about becoming a tutor, contact Rose King (Tutorial Coordinator) at (909)385-8566, or e-mail her at rking@sbccd.cc.ca.us
